- Course Etiquette | BSE Golf Club
Course Etiquette Why Golf Etiquette? In order for you and other players on the course to enjoy your round of golf, Bury St Edmunds Golf Club expects members and visitors to observe the basic rules of golf etiquette. Golf etiquette is simply a set of rules and practices designed to make the game of golf safer and more enjoyable for golfers and to minimise the possible damage to golf equipment and courses These rules are common sense and extremely simple. They make the game more enjoyable for everyone. Respect the game and the other players! General Golf Etiquette Wear appropriate attire that conforms to the dress code of the course. Be punctual and arrive on time for your tee time. Tee off on your tee time! Keep your mobile phone silenced while on the golf course. Be respectful of other golfers and staff at the club. Avoid loud and disruptive behaviour. Be considerate of other players on the course. Follow the club’s rules and regulations. Golf Silence is Golden – Don’t talk or make noise while another golfer is taking their shot. Remember this applies to the warm up net by the 1st Tee and 18th green. Be mindful of others playing when preparing for your round. Remember to keep a safe distance in case you’re waiting right behind a golfer for your turn – golf clubs can be dangerous (and painful)! Don’t stand in another golfer’s line of sight when they are about to take their shot. Where do I stand? Generally, you should always try and stand behind the ball, ideally to the side of the person hitting. Wait for every player to tee off before leaving the tee box. Don’t step on another golfer’s putting line. You can congratulate and make small talk before and after the game or between shots. Play “ready golf” – check with the people in your group to make sure they’re all fine with this. Help others find their ball. Help find their ball if yours is further than theirs or they’re next to hit. Avoid spending too much time looking for balls – remember the ‘3 minute rule’. The three minutes begin when you reach the place where you suspect your ball. If your playing partners reach that place before you, that does not count towards your three minutes. If you think your ball may be lost – play a provisional ball and announce it explicitly. Allow faster groups of golfers to play through if you are holding up their game. Walking Speed – speed up your walking between shots, if you are falling behind. Take a limited number of practice swings (one or two) – quick and easy. Golfers should always shake hands at the end of the game. Greens Repair Your Ball Marks on Greens. Unrepaired pitch marks or poorly repaired ball marks can lead to missed putts and surfaces that take weeks to recuperate. On the green, the player farthest from the hole putts first. Course Repair any divots that you make on the golf course. Minimise the divots in your practice swings. If hitting an iron or wedge from the tee box, you can set your ball behind another divot to avoid making a new one. Rake the sand in bunkers after your shot. Don’t hit a ball into the group ahead of you – never hit a ball when there’s a group ahead of you ‘within your distance’. It is dangerous! Always yell “Fore” when an errant ball is hit towards other people (“Fore” is a term commonly used in golf that essentially means “duck and cover”.) Avoid taking Golf Trolleys and buggies within 15 feet / 5 m of the edge of the green. Never take buggies or trolleys between green side bunkers and the green Golf buggies / Carts Golf buggies should never be driven in a way that endangers other players or golf course staff. Keep golf buggies off the greens and tee boxes. Avoid wet turf as the weight of a heavy golf buggies can easily tear through a patch of wet turf. Follow the golf buggies paths wherever possible avoid driving close to the greens. Bookings and Start Times Be responsible when booking tee times. Please cancel any bookings, if booked and your circumstances change. Be aware that the tee times in the BRS system may be different to what you booked, due to last minute cancellations. Score Card & Scores Bury St Edmunds Golf Club follows WHS guidelines in all cases. Stableford golf: pick up your ball if you have already taken your double bogey shot, as you cannot score points on this hole anymore! For competitions, enter your scores on your mobile, even if you have played badly (or too well!). Any problems when entering your scores may be resolved by discussing with the pro shop personnel. Finally... Do not cheat! Do not lose your temper!
- Club History | Bury St Edmunds Golf Club | Suffolk
When the course at Bury St Edmunds was created in 1924, the world was a very different place. Huddersfield Town were the football league champions, Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell were taking gold for Britain in the ‘Chariots of Fire’ Olympics in Paris. King George V had opened the British Empire Exhibition at the new Wembley stadium, Ramsey MacDonald was the first Labour prime minister. CLUB HISTORY Golfing since 1924 We are very proud of our club, with 2 fine golf courses and social facilities to match. There’s a welcome to members and guests alike. Our 18-hole championship course often hosts regional competitions by virtue of the test of golf, all year round playability and our commitment to maintaining the high quality of the course. Indeed, as a member-owned club all ‘profits’ get re-invested back into the courses and facilities, and we have an on-going programme of course and club improvements. Our 9-hole course enjoys the same high quality, and is a popular Pay-&-Play facility used by many in mid-Suffolk to learn and hone their game before taking the next leap. Our coaching staff are highly regarded and can teach individually or in groups in structured learning. We have a thriving ladies section, as well a Junior Development Programme priced to encourage a wider take up of the game. And so, whatever your standard of golf, there’s a welcome at our club. Just drop by and see for yourself. A BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR CLUB When the course at Bury St Edmunds was created in 1924, the world was a very different place. The Thief of Baghdad, with Douglas Fairbanks, was movie of the year and Gershwin’s Rhapsody In Blue the hit song. The golf course’s original design was by the first British Ryder Cup team captain Ted Ray, winner of an Open and a US Open. It measured 6,087 yards, which was regarded as long for a non-links course. Today’s measurement of 6,676 off the white tees is still the second longest in Suffolk In an era when golf was largely the province of the wealthy aristocratic and professional classes, the club was created with a deliberate policy of being open and available to the townspeople of Bury St Edmunds, with the admirable tagline “No swank and no bunkum”. The first pro was Arthur Matthews and a splendid link with the past (for any sport is nothing without its roots) in the form of one of his clubs – an ancient hickory-shafted mid-iron stamped with his name – hangs above the bar, the prize for the annual President’s Mashie competition. Matthews (who earned 50 shillings a week) was also in charge of the clubhouse, which was then lit by oil lamps, for mains electricity was not connected until 1937. He had an assistant, Miss Nellie Baldwin, who was paid 12s 6d a week to provide food and (crikey!) “anything else necessary”. During World War II the course, like many other sporting venues (racing and football grandstands, for instance, were commonly used as troop billets or hospitals), did its bit. The humps and hollows in the belt of woodland between the 7th and 8th fairways are reminders of an assault course built by the Suffolk Regiment. The ladies’ section held regular competitions to raise money for causes such as the Red Cross. A wholesale redesign of the course (by noted golf architect Frank Pennick) and a new clubhouse became necessary during the sixties because of the construction of the A14. New holes were built, original ones renumbered – what was the first is now the sixth, for example, and the old sixth now the fourteenth – and many greens became multi-tiered. The new-look Bury St Edmunds was formally opened in May 1969 Another step forward was the construction of a nine-hole course, opened in October 1991 and now a thriving pay-and-play facility, a boon for beginners and casual golfers but no ‘gimme’ for the more experienced player either.

- WHS & Slope Rating | Bury St Edmunds Golf Club
A course rating is the evaluation of the playing difficulty of the course for scratch golfers under normal course and weather conditions. The rating is based on yardage and other obstacles to the extent that they affect the scoring difficulty for the scratch golfer. Course rating is expressed as the number of strokes expected taken to one decimal place. World Handicap System & Slope Rating 18 HOLE HANDICAP TABLE 9 HOLE HANDICAP TABLE COURSE RATING 18 Hole BLACK M: 72.0 LIGHT BLUE M: 71.0 ORANGE M: 68.2 LIGHT BLUE F: 77.2 ORANGE F: 73.8 SLOPE RATING 18 Hole BLACK M: 131 LIGHT BLUE M: 127 ORANGE M: 117 LIGHT BLUE F: 139 ORANGE F: 128 COURSE RATING 9 Hole GK BLACK M: 61.1 BLACK F: 64.4 ORANGE M: 59.8 ORANGE F: 61.4 SLOPE RATING 9 Hole GK BLACK M: 101 BLACK F: 104 ORANGE M: 95 ORANGE F: 97 So how does it all work? EXPLAINED Course Rating A course rating is the evaluation of the playing difficulty of the course for scratch golfers under normal course and weather conditions. The rating is based on yardage and other obstacles to the extent that they affect the scoring difficulty for the scratch golfer. Course rating is expressed as the number of strokes expected taken to one decimal place. EXPLAINED Slope Rating Is the number which indicates the relative playing difficulty of a course for bogey golfer compared to scratch golfers. It is calculated by taking the difference between the Bogey and Course Ratings multiplied by a constant factor, expressed as a whole number between 55 and 155. A golf course of standard relative playing difficulty has a slope rating of 113. EXPLAINED Handicap Index This is a measure of a player’s ability calculated against the Slope Rating of a golf course of standard playing difficulty. It represents a golfer’s playing handicap on a course with a Neutral Slope Rating of 113 and calculated as a rolling average of the lowest 8 from the last 20 score differentials. Each time a new score is submitted the average of the lowest 8 from the last 20 is re-calculated, which may or may not lead to a change of Handicap Index. There are safeguards to ensure that a player’s handicap does not rise too quickly when a player is going through a spell of poor form. EXPLAINED Low Handicap Index A player’s lowest Handicap Index during the last 12 months is used as a point to limit increases in the Handicap Index. Soft Cap: Potential increases of Handicap Index to a figure greater than (LHI + 3) are limited by half the amount over three, eg: 5 is limited to 4, 6 is limited to 4.5 etc. Hard Cap: The maximum that the Handicap Index can increase to is (LHI + 5). EXPLAINED Exceptional Scores An adjustment to the Handicap Index after a very low score has been posted. A reduction of -1 for scores between 7 and 9 below Handicap Index. A reduction of -2 for scores 10 or more below Handicap Index. The reduction is applied to the last 20 scores on the Scoring Record and drops off gradually over the next 20 rounds. EXPLAINED New Handicaps A new player’s Handicap Index is initially allocated at 2 less than the best of the Adjusted Gross Scores from 3 x 18-hole scorecards submitted. Cards can be submitted as 6 x 9 or other combinations submitted to the Pro Shop. Subsequent Handicap Index calculations change as more scores are entered.
