bigpicRound 1 at Stowmarket - Bury v Ipswich

The morning Foursomes laid the foundation for a successful day for Bury, we won two of the 3 matches and halved the other.

At the start of the afternoon session of singles we were 2 1/2 - 1/2 ahead.
Chris Tilbrook led the afternoon team out and came home with a half, wins for Clare Sykes and Joan Warnett sealed the victory for the team.

This was very much a team effort with all our players and their caddies making a valuable contribution to our success and were fine ambassadors of the Club.

  • COUNTY HASKELL

Rnd 1 Bury v Newton Green

bigpicThe Haskell is a 36 hole match-play foursome competition off scratch. This year Bury had drawn Newton Green in the first round. Newton Green had won the competition last year beating Ipswich in the final on our course.

Georgia Parker was selected to play in her first Haskell match partnering Lynne Wright. Georgia showed no nerves hitting a tremendous drive on the first finishing near the “barbers” striped pole. Bury won the first hole with a par and never looked back. Next 4 holes were halved. Bury sank a tricky putt for a 4 on 6th so 2 up. After 9 holes Bury were 2 up. Some good putts were sunk by both pairings over the next 7 holes leaving Bury 3 up. 17th was first hole on the back 9 to be halved. Bury won the 18th with a 6 in spite of being in two fairway bunkers.

As Bury started the afternoon round 4 up, it was important they stayed focussed and did not let Newton Green get back into the match. Four of the first 5 holes were halved. Bury were a few feet from the pin on the 6th in 2 so back to 4 up. Georgia was getting plenty of practice of greenside bunker shots but good teamwork as putt sunk on 7th for a par so Bury now 5 up. 9th halved with pars. 10th Newton Green hit good shot to pin so back to 4up. Tension building as 11th halved. 12th both pairs were just off the green in two but Bury walked off with another win so back to 5 up. Georgia hit a perfect 8 iron on the 13th leaving Lynne with a 3 foot putt for a birdie winning the match 6 and 5. A brilliant result.

Support of our captains and ladies was really appreciated.

    Next round Felixstowe away

  • COUNTY WESTON 2017

The Weston team played in their first Plate Competition match on Sunday 30th April teeing off at 11.00 at Stowmarket.

Conditions were very good for golf although the swirling wind gave players on both sides pause for thought at times.

Mariette Robbertse, playing against Liz Laflin and without much recent match play nevertheless triumphed to give us a point.

Lynne Wright came across a player who was really on form and who also had some fortunate ricochets at times, a point to Stowmarket after this match.

Bev Allen, nursing an injury, fought hard throughout her match, she and Yvonne Hollis were well matched. The match went to the 2nd extra hole where Bev finally lost.

4th string rookie Georgia Parker played with a maturity which belied her years. Despite being two down going off the 16th she pulled back to all square by the end of the 18th. She only needed one more hole to pull off a victory against the very experienced Fiona Ferrie.

Clare Charlwood found herself against an in form Mary Ransome; honing her game after having had a baby 7 months ago. Another point to Stowmarket.

The final result Stowmarket 3 - Bury St Edmunds 2.

Every game counts in this fixture as we have previously won this competition on points despite winning fewer matches than our nearest rivals.

Thank you to all those who played and to Viv Kemp for being on standby despite completing a 17 mile walk the previous day.

    HOLE IN ONE FUND
This is a reminder about the "Hole in One Fund" - for those of you who have not heard of this before - you pay £1 into the office and sign your name on the list in the Ladies Changing Room (on the board beside the mirror) - then if you get a hole in one in any qualifying competition you will scoop the total of the pot at the time. A new list will then commence - this applies to both the 18 and 9 hole courses. The idea is that you will have a starting fund to pay for your bar bill when you offer celebratory drinks to your chums.  Give it a go and sign up next time you are at the club.
